Nice! I recently had a weird moment where I tried to reserve a custom name I came up with in Sindarin for a One Ring RPG character, and someone had already taken it. I had to sub in a vowel with an accent. Makes me wonder whether the original taker of the name had also created it in Sindarin, or whether it was just something that sounded cool.
My advice for next time would be to try out the availability of a name by either of the following methods before wasting Gems on a Name Change Contract: Method 1: Try adding the name to your Friends List. It will tell you whether it's taken (which will add the player) or not (resulting in an unknown character name).
So if you change a character name, you may use the former name for a new character on the same account within 24 hours. Alternately, you may use two separate Name Change Contracts to swap names between two characters on your account, as long as you do that within 24 hours. /official site (go figure)
The humans in Guild Wars 2 are heavily based on different cultures in the real world, so the names are generally the same as well. The 4 biggest groups are the Krytans, the Canthans, the Ascalonians and the Elonians. The Krytan names (first 3 names in this generator) are either Greek or Italian, which seems to be the most prominent in Guild Wars.

I was surprised that Peirene - a name I had in mind for a female sylvari - was already in use, since I came up with it "by myself" (inspired by the name Irene). But apparently someone else had the same idea before me :P. For male norn I really like Brodach, a version I made of Brádach (that means "large-chested").

You can also try to report it via a support-ticket, maybe they can tell you the right way to handle it.
If you’ve been having trouble deciding what Thief build to play in GW2, Condi Daredevil is a good choice. It’s easy to play, easy to gear for, and deals plenty of damage. You can bring it anywhere from solo play to group content. If that didn’t sound good enough, Daredevil has an additional Endurance bar.
